localzuk Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 We've got a user who has an issue with VLC here. When they close VLC, it doesn't actually quit. It disappears but vlc.exe is still running in task manager. As VLC defaults to opening only a single instance at a time, this means she can no longer open any more files. I've temporarily changed the preferences to allow multiple instances, but this means she has a huge number of vlc.exe instances open still. I've had a search around and everything points to this being a v 1.1.x issue or thereabouts, but we're running the latest version (2.1.3 I believe). Anyone got any ideas?
mac_shinobi Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Un-install, use CCleaner to remove registry entries and also remove any temp directories / files relating to the install of VLC ( which if it is windows 7 ) will generally be in programdata, go into the registry and remove stuff relating to vlc and then delete the directory for VLC out of program files and run ccleaner again to check for registry entries that are not needed and clear temp files Download the latest version ( again ) and run as administrator , reboot and log back on and try again You said any idea's .....

ZeroHour Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 What cards are in the computers? Sound/Video Does it happen for local admins? Try changing Video Output from "Default" (DirectX mode) to OpenGL, the video quality is not as nice and it uses more cpu but it removes the processing from the card.

Tony we had this problem, you need to make a batch (or vbs) to end the process. VLC are aware of the bug (and should really be fixed after 2 years), but if it still isn't then that's the best way I found around it. We also had the issue with only 1 member of staff, but it wasn't due to anything we could logically find!

Maybe not but if the other media player ( windows media player Home Cinema ) allows the user to do what they want without launching a multitude of processes for the same program / app then surely that fixes it ( even in a work around kind of way )

It forces the closing of the app from the task manager (/im = image name in task manager)... you may need to add *32 if you work on a 64bit machine. Edited March 20, 2014 by featured_spectre

Ahh I thought you had something a bit smarter which cleaned up vlc when the draw window was gone. Not sure non admins can run taskkill tbh. What were your users playing when it failed to close? Arthur Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 @localzuk. Does VLC close properly when run under a different user account (as Zerohour mentioned). Is the teacher using a laptop? If so, does it make any difference if you turn off the wireless connection and use Ethernet instead? Have you tried the 64-bit version of VLC, updating the graphics card drivers or using Process Monitor to find out if VLC is waiting for something/trying to write data somewhere? any suggestions ref vlc? The first thing I would try is to delete the preferences files (vlcrc and vlc-qt-interface.ini in "%AppData%\vlc") while VLC isn't running, although I assume @localzuk has already done this when uninstalling/reinstalling VLC? mac_shinobi Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 What sort of issue(s) or problems does CCleaner cause on a domain joined pc , I don't use it often to clear the registry on domain joined pc's, generally just if Sophos is having issues being re-installed after I have done a plethora of other things
