WSUS And Sccm 2012 setup

Some advise please,

 

I have been following the SCCM setup guide on windows-noobs.com but have hit a bit of a problem when it comes to setting up the software update point and connecting to wsus, my setup is slightly different I dont have a CAS server just a stand alone primary server but this is also a DC not ideal but this is just why I am testing, my problems is you cant run WSUS on a DC so I have setup another machine stuck 2008 on it and install WSUS 3.0 SP2 on it but I haven't run through the configuration wizard as instructed in the guide (as you do the setup in SCCM when you add the SUP) I have install the WSUS console on my 2012 server and can connect to WSUS on my 2008 server but when I run through adding the SUP and the configuration the sync fails. is this the correct way of doing this or is there a easier way.
