Wirral_Wonderer Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) I have been trawling the web for a few days and not been able to find how to stop students (not staff) from being able to share files\documents through onedrive on Office365 I know this goes against the idea of SharePoint and collaboration, however I still want to stop them! Any ideas, or should I just give up? Edited March 19, 2014 by Wirral_Wonderer
Wirral_Wonderer Posted March 19, 2014 Author Posted March 19, 2014 Sted - I want them to have access to onedrive through office365, but not to be able to share files. Maark - Because it seems the right thing to do, do you not block them?
FN-GM Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 cant you just block it with your webfilter? No good if they are at home.
Wirral_Wonderer Posted March 19, 2014 Author Posted March 19, 2014 Just to clarify, I want students to use OneDrive through Office365 but disable the facility to share with anyone else
maark Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 We use google drive and try and encourage them to use collaboration features. If students abuse it - sharing dodgy files, games etc. then that is a behaviour management issue - students will always find a way if they want to. They could email each other files using any personal webmail or ues dropbox or similar. We use impero to monitor students and smoothwall to filter internet but you cannot block everything - it is impossible.
Boredguy Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 If I remember correctly, you can disable the share functionality via SharePoint. It does not remove the option to share, but does stop the recipient from receiving the share request.
Wirral_Wonderer Posted March 19, 2014 Author Posted March 19, 2014 Thanks Maark. I am coming round to that way of thinking. You are right there is no way of stopping students from sharing files, even down to pen drives. Thanks anyway.

Boredguy Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 My source says they just went though all the sharing options in SharePoint and disabled them. 1
SpiderScripts Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 If it is possible, it would be an option in the central administrators console, but to be honest I think it's pretty mad to disable sharing of files. Honestly, if you manage your students use of the computers within school effectively and teach them well about eSafety, then you shouldn't have any problems with them sharing files. I personally make heavy use of the sharing features with my classes, they complete homework electronically and share it with me instead of e-mailing. I create files and share with them to quickly distribute work. We even occasionally create shared documents which we will work on together collaboratively, either me and a student, or small groups of students. The benefits of sharepoint document sharing are immense, and well worth the occasional misuse and reprimand.
