Google Chrome ADM + User cannot open Chrome on multiple computers.

Guys and Girls,

 

I am experiencing an interesting problem with Google Chrome. I am seeking to deploy Google Chrome across the whole site. I am using the ADM templates and have set the 'Set User data directory' to "${roaming_app_data}\Chrome" this prevent users from storing data such as downloaded extensions history etc onto the local machine and redirects it to there network drive. Which is N:\Chrome. However with this setting in place the same user cannot do open Google Chrome on multiple computers. Chrome just closes. If the user closes down chrome on one PC it opens on the other. This isn't a problem with out students as they are only restricted to one concurrent logon however members of staff would like to have chrome open on two PC's. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is such a shame because Google Chrome works beautifully with GPO and we want to get rid of IE!

There is no way to get around this that I know of - the files are locked by the open Chrome process, so they can't be opened again by another copy of Chrome on a different machine. Your options are:

 

1. Storing within the profile and therefore allowing multiple users. But bear in mind that roaming profiles being used to log in more than once can cause some oddities.

2. Storing on a network drive and not allowing more than 1 copy of chrome at a time.

 

My question would be a more fundamental one - why do any users need to be logged into more than 1 machine at a time, and then need to use Chrome?

we found that it locks the data directory so the only way we found to solve this was to move the data directory into their profile so it's copied between the server and pc on each login

@localzuk Ideally they wouldn't but I just want to see if it can be done as this may cause some confusion to our teachers who are logged onto various machines. @mdench are you an RM school, if so how did you do this and does it work well?

${profile}\Google\Google Chrome\

 

 

This then sets the data directory to C:\Users\\Google\Google Chrome all our teaching staff are set up with roaming profiles so this will then be copied between server and pcs upon log on / off

We've tried setting this and it works OK but cause Google Chrome to crash when closing it. Anyone else had this issue?
