Hi All,

 

Just taken charge of this badboy:

 

 

 

With the new version 5.0 DSM it has lots of goodies to play with...............only problem is which ones to choose hehe!

 

 

 

 

Plus lots more with 22TB formatted RAID 6 backend storage,

 

Gonna have me some fun tring to break it first hehe!

Not sure how true this is but have been advised by some people and by searching forums etc that if you want to do any firmware updates on the synology units, do it before you put any data on said unit, if you do it whilst data is on there then not sure synology will get any or recover any data for you.

 

The whole "If it aint broke, don't fix it" so don't apply firmware updates if it doesnt add any additional features / security or anything that you need as it may break the unit.

 

Not sure if this applies to the synology unit you have got but just something to bare in mind.

 

Wish I could get a NAS Device for home - money is lacking a lot for now

I have never been a one for updating firmware on the assumption it will make my device better, it is a true saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" as so many people on here have found out from experience, one which comes to mind is the Oracle SUN 7110 SAN debate, people updated firmware and got nothing but problems so I am aware that this can and will have a catastrophic impact on storage units alike.

 

Just having a play with it at the moment, 5 secs to join Domain and pull all the AD groups and users in but haven't defined whether I really need to have it joined to Domain yet. Maybe just set up a few LUNs and Targets point various servers at these and see what it does yeah?

The toys are awesome on Synology boxes. Just be wary, some require purchasing extra licenses at quite large cost (like the surveillance for instance)

@mac_shinobi. Synology have a demo of their DSM software on their website. With this, you can see what it's like before buying a NAS.
