Stream from a Video Camera to LAN

Hi

Has anyone ever done a live broadcast from within their LAN?

 

I have a requirement to broadcast a live video captured from a laptop, with a HD camera connected and 'broadcast' so it can be viewed in our lecture theatre, which has a large projector/screen and sound system.

 

Was thinking of using Windows Media encoder on the host laptop and then accessing the stream via the lecture theatre PC.... But it crashes with a windows encoder error as it starts up, or when I use low quality it lags about 5 seconds behind. - both on gigabit links

 

Anyone have any novel ways to achieve this?

I've used VLC media player to broadcast across to 6 class rooms.

Did this only a few days ago and worked a treat. We do it a couple times a year and always works well. We use a old video camera with firewire but anything that you can input into you computer should work I.e a webcam etc here is my instructions using VLC player:

To stream video from a camcorder over the network do the following after plugging the camera in to the computer via firewire cable

 

Open up VLC player on the computer you want to stream from and click Media and then Steaming...

 

Along the top choose Capture Device and make sure the capture mode says DirectShow.

 

Choose Stream at the bottom

 

This will then bring up a new window called Stream Output, choose Next

 

In the destinations choose a new destination and choose HTTP and then click add, click next and then stream to finish.

 

This is it you are now streaming the output from the camera.

 

You now need to open this up on another computer (it can be more than one computer the more computers the more likely for network strain)

 

To open the stream open VLC Media player go to Media, Open Network Stream in the protocol box choose HTTP and in the address put in either the IP or DNS name in place and make sure you include the port used in the streaming capture which by default is 8080 so for example computername:8080

 

A few seconds later the stream will open the audio will be fuzzy if the camera does not support stereo recording. In VLC player go to Audio, Audio Channels and choose Left.

 

Job Done
