Apart from the obvious wine shops to stock up on some nice cheap alcohol! She wants to go to a pharmacy to get makeup, skincare and other things that i dont understand what they do! In France for about 7/8 hours. Got a day return for £28 from P&O including 6 free bottles of wine!

City Europe is a good place to go, they have loads of shops, pharmacy bars and restaurants and it is all under cover. They also have a supermarket - Carrefour, which sells wine and beer. Only five min drive from the port. Calais itself isn't much to look at. Have a look here. 1

We get an early crossing to Calais and get to Auchan as it opens around 8.30-9am. First tip: Don't go on a Sunday... most of France is closed on Sundays except very close to Christmas We can 'do' Auchan and have the car loaded by about 10.30am and have a coffee (usually 2!) and a gateau in the coffee shop before heading into town. We park for free on Boulevard des Allies There is a market on Saturdays near the old port area... it is better in the warmer months, but is there all year round. There are some great restaurants for lunch here too. Our favourites are L'histoire Ancienne and Restaurant de la Mer. The beach (between the old port and Sangatte) is fantastic - miles of sand. It's great for a stroll to walk off lunch as long as it's not too windy. It's also good for kite flying. 1

Yep get to pick the 6 bottles of wine up on the way out, would have thought on way back made more sense but never mind! £28 would be a reasonable price for just the six bottles of wine let alone with the ferry crossing as well!! Its £23 if you go on any other day apart from Saturday. Wouldnt go on a sunday as like elsiegee40 says most things are closed on a sunday in france. In rural france most things are closed from 12-2 as well!! Learnt that the hard way from staying with my mum when she used to live in france a few years ago. Thanks for the suggestions of Auchan and the old port for the market, i will pop them in the satnav so im ready to go.

By the time you factor in your travel costs, things are definitely not cheaper. You are shopping there for a day out, not to save money... you can't ignore the travel costs!
DSapseid Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Im going for a day out and my gf is kinda obsessed by makeup think having 130 nail polishes just tipping the iceberg (whole makeup collection is worth thousands) and apparently there's something for removing makeup that is about 4/5 euros in France and about £18 pounds over here! so shes stocking up on it! lol

We are off to Disneyland Paris in May so wondered whether it was worth making a pitstop at these shops to stock up on things which are cheaper over there?
Andrew_C Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Don't know if it is still the case, but for my last few trips (some years back) I took my diesel car over running on fumes. Came back brimming! I think that the savings covered costs, but little more.
elsiegee40 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 @fiza It is swings and roundabouts. Some things may be a little cheaper and some are a lot more expensive. From recent trips, we found that there wasn't much in it over all. Auchan Calais has an English language website, so you can compare prices with home on that. You will get good French wines cheaper than in the UK... but we tend the same money as we would at home and just buy better quality booze! You will need to do some homework on the internet...overall I would say that the UK is probably cheaper for many things. It is just there are some foods we can buy there that we can't buy here 1
