After having our new broadband put in I'm trying to get HAP on the internet. I have port 443 of our external IP forwarding to port 443 of our internal web server and all I get is "This page cannot be displayed".

Anyone have any suggestions for a struggling geek?

can you telnet to the external IP/hostname (on port 80 if you aren't using https, otherwise 443)?

Windows: Get HTTP Header of a Web Page using Telnet - Xoc Software (RVBA Conventions, Maya Calendar, et.al.)

You may need to enable telnet in programs and features.

If it works, then it's showing that the port forward is set correctly. Can you get to the webserver's root page (e.g. the IIS holding page if you haven't changed it) externally?

That should be OK then. If the SSL certificate is a self signed one, then chrome/firefox/IE will produce the SSL connection error (just confirm the cerificate details before you accept it). Once you have accepted the certificate you should get the IIS page (greenish colour if server 2008/R2 or blue for 2012+) if you browsed the to the website root otherwise try the path to your HAP install (https://domain.com/HAP).
