Shared folder quota

I have inherited a old shared area that as always is full and that nobody takes responsibility for. We all know the scenario of trying to get staff to clear out unused files always to be met with the expression of "this doesn't apply to me!".

 

The volume on the server is getting quite full so I have been considering drastic action. What I am hoping to do is re structure the shared area with quota limits on the folders rather than the users. That way we know there is no way the shared volume can completely run out of space. To my knowledge by default Windows can only do quotas per user; so would I be looking at a 3rd party software solution?

 

Has anyone successfully implemented anything like this?

File Server Resource Manager is your friend.

 

It's also worth doing a little maintenance by looking for files that haven't been accessed for a good while (you may need to enable this and give it some time) then archiving them off the drive.

Thanks for this, I don't know how I didn't see this when I was searching yesterday. Will definitely get onto the last accessed dates too.
