[sims] SQL 2012 Migration

Having a migration issue at one of my schools, runs CC4.3 on a Server 2008 R2 setup.

 

SQL 2012 won't install, therefore the migration process from SQL2008R2 fails.

The error I'm getting is:

 

TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

 

'.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 51622.

All the googling I can find says "Uninstall MSDE" (SQL Express 2000). There's no such thing, and I don't want to go uninstalling the original SQL server for obvious reasons. This is whether I go through Capita's migration process or straight to SQL Server 2012 Express installer. It extracts files, the first page loads (Installation Center) then clicking on "New SQL Server stand-alone installation" gives us a popup with the above failure.

 

Anyone come across this? I've disabled everything I could think of that may have caused issues like the RM auditor databases etc.

Right, this can be disregarded. It was indeed an MSDE instance!

 

So for those of you with a CC3/CC4 server which is also your SIMS/SQL server, you'll find your RMAUDPRINTERCREDITS database thingy is the cause. Uninstall from control panel (its under the RM Printer Credits Database) and bob's your uncle. If you use printer credits, find a working solution instead!

Probably a stupid question but... can I run SQL2008 and SQL2012 side by side on the same server?
