I know that each access point must have a unique ip address and the access point name must be unique.

 

Just wondered if the ssid needs to be unique for ech access point. cant find much information upon ths

Nope, the SSID can be the same - that way, if you have the same WEP/WPA details also, it is classed as the same network. So you can travel between AP's.

We did have up the last summer holidays different SSIDs, but I went around and made them all the same.

 

It has been an total success, and much less stress for us, when teachers want to take laptops to different areas.

The only time I've had AP's set to different SSID's is when I've been testing signal levels. It's much easier to see what is where.

If you just use 1 SSID, then it can throw a whole lesson out of the window if the nearest AP is broken in some way.

 

The laptops will try and connect to one further away. They usually manage to do this but then proceed to download 1 bit/hour which tends to cripple things.

 

If you have different SSIDs for each AP, then the teacher stands a bit of chance in working out what's wrong as they can tell they are connecting to the wrong AP.

 

So 1 SSID - simple but problematical if it goes wrong.

Many SSID - more complex setup but easier to fix.

 

This based on my primary schools where the more proactive heads have let me purchase up to 3 APs

 

(Most just operate from 1 and move it from class to class - you can guess how succesfull that is at working when the teacher needs it!)
