Am I missing something simple?

Installing dropbox for one of our departments. (Don't ask) I have run into an issue that must be simple to solve, but i can't think how. To install software requires local admin rights, so log in as user, install Dropbox using Local Admin credentials, but then dropbox tries to sync files to the local admins user area, despite being directed to the network drive for the specified user. It also only runs for the local admin user, and refuses to run for the standard user. Its Win 7/server 2008 without roaming profiles.

I take it your using the right click and 'Run as different user' to install? If so thats the issue when you do this the whole install is run in the context of the local admin account, so everything settings wise will get tied to it. So the local admins home directory path will be used.

Yes, Right click and run as Admin.

So am I right in thinking the only way to get this to work is to give the user admin rights, install dropbox, and then revoke the rights afterwards?

You can't install it on behalf of the user as a admin?

Yes, unless you can change the local folder path in the registry somewhere for dropbox.

Humm, +1 for UAC here. The teacher want's it (and it's affecting T&L) They get to the point that it want admin creds. I pop them in and the software install and runs fine. (I then alter the firewall via GPO to stop it trying a LAN sync and discovery) PORT:17500
