enjay Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 We're starting to play with mobile devices, and finding that a lot of apps don't connect. My thinking is that this is because they are trying to make direct connections, and our ISP are blocking this. Is there anything else which could be causing it? If it is proxy-related, how do you get round this? Our ISP are extremely reluctant to permit proxy bypasses, and even then, we would need to know all the addresses involved, so the students couldn't have free choice of apps. Help? Advice? Sympathy?!
Marshall_IT Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Lots of sympathy, I know a lot of people on here have similar issues. As far as I know there isn't much that can be done apart from bypass. When I was on the la filtering previously they eventually set up extra subnets for mobile devices with certain addresses set to bypass the filter. Specifically some and Google play store addresses plus some extras. This came about after concerted pressure from multiple schools.
jbailey Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Is your ISP your LEA? We have used an invisible proxy service by our LEA and this helped with a lot of these issues. My 2 cents
FN-GM Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 The devices and apps you are using are designed for consumer use, IE not having a proxy. When one uses consumer devices these type of things happen unfortunately.

Not entirely true, as it also affects apps on Windows 8 (including activation!), and you can hardly call Windows 8 a consumer device.
