computer_expert Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 BBC News - 'End of an era' as DC-10 makes last international trip With the last commercial passenger flight of the DC10 touching down at Birmingham on Thursday, it marks the beginning of the end for passenger tri-jets . KLM are retiring the MD11 (the DC10's big brother) later in the year too.
FN-GM Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) Some say the MD-11 needs to be removed, its got unique handing characteristics compared to other aircraft, this has caused a few accidents. KLM is the last passenger airline using then. But the MD-11 will be around for ages, airlines like Lufthansa, UPS & Fedex have them for cargo operations. They can get carry the same weight as the early jumbo's but with much less fuel, a larger range and lower running costs. Fedex also have loads of DC-10's, 60 - 70 of them. They changed the avionics so they only need 2 crew to fly them, so will be around for a long time yet! Edited February 22, 2014 by FN-GM
XiJ Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Flown on both DC-10 and Tristar. Doesn't the DC-10 have a pretty terrible safety record?! Also flew on a DC8 (I think because the DC10 was broken on the way back!!!)
computer_expert Posted February 22, 2014 Author Posted February 22, 2014 Some say the MD-11 needs to be removed... Hello Stig! As for the freighters, I agree that they willl still be around for a while yet (DHL only retired their DC-8 freighters a few years ago). Flown on both DC-10 and Tristar. Doesn't the DC-10 have a pretty terrible safety record?! It did at the start (it was grounded for a while, like the 787 was), but eventually became the winner in terms of total frames built when compared the the Tristar
FN-GM Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) The DC-10 had lots of hull losses and fatalities when it went into service. Many of them caused by the cargo doors blowing off, for some reason it took a good few crashes to sort them out. The problem with the TriStar is it was late to the party and they engine on the tail was hard to maintain compared to the DC-10. In the end is was the Boeing 777 that killed the A340, DC-10, MD-11 and 747. Edited February 22, 2014 by FN-GM
