Free Remote Desktop alternative?

Hi guys,

 

Looking for a free remote desktop alternative for all the work machines. Something I can use to just jump on and check how people are or if they request support.

Would prefer something people can leave in the background and forget

 

Anyone have any ideas? Teamviewer keeps pestering me for a license

I think I remember using VNC with an old linux machine of mine? Any personal preference of VNC you think suites well?

I'm using the Remote Control utility the guy there wrote.. it's very good. It installs a VNC client, runs well, and removes it when it's finished. Works with everything I've tried so far.

It's REALLY easy to use.. check the options for a couple of useful ones.. Also, if you have users with multiple screens, you'll want to change the scaling when you connect, otherwise things can be VERY small... you'll see... (or not!).

Trying to connect via hostname, but it says I don't have permission. I take it I need to setup remote desktop to be allowed?

No, but you need to be in the Domain Admins group. (Or at least a group with admin privs on the remote workstation)

This is where my lack of networking knowledge comes in handy. (Not haha).

 

not entirely sure we are all on a domain? We aren't connecting via a server, everyone is a singular machine and we connect to a cloud based server by mapping the drive.

 

Our Workgroup is "WORKGROUP"

Have an account on this machine which is using the remote desktop control software, I have allowed RDC on the other machine (Mark-Laptop).

 

Both machines have an account called Profile Admin

 

Both on the Workgroup: "WORKGROUP"

Can't really swap to a domain, to many machines. That and some machines are taken out and about :/

Sorry - missed this.

 

It requires that you login to the machine that you are running utility on with an account that has admin privileges on the remote machine.. I'm really not sure that this is going to work on a workgroup for you. It needs to silently install the VNC client when it contacts the remote machine, hence the need for the admin account. RDC and associated accounts are irrelevant for this utility.

 

You can always have laptops that are on a domain, but not connected all the time - but this seems a bit overkill in terms of work required for you if this is all you need to do..
