IWDave Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 I think its an un-branded HP server (SR2600URBRPR inside) - This is the only ESXi that I have out of 4 servers, normally I can login to MegaRAID Storage Manager and it tells me exactly which one to pull out (but not available with ESXi), and that normally matches the light that is out on the server HDD, but I want to double check before I pull it out on the ESXi. I could wait until the end of the day, power off and boot into RAID BIOS for clarification (as that normally works), but didn't know if that screen shot would help.

PotNoodleTech Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Yep - physically look at the drive. Even if there are no amber lights or anthing (depending on your server) - it will be the drive with no activity light at all on it as once it's marked as degraded - it is not used. 1

I had to crowbar in a 3rd party driver addon to see any drive/storage/raid stats in ESXi. If it's not evident by the flashy lights on the machine it's time to reboot I'm afraid and check in the config utility unless it has a network thingy. One of our 3ware raid controllers has a handy web page management thingy. 1
IWDave Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 Thanks peeps - I think that's what I might have to do "reboot and see the RAID BIOS". Bit of a bugger, was hoping to do a live swap out, thankfully its a Friday and most staff will disappear early.
IWDave Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 Resolved: Powered down the server, booted into RAID BIOS, got the correct slot failure, pulled the disk; restarted server; chucked in a spare, rebuild in progress :-) 1
PotNoodleTech Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 You did the right thing! Replacing the wrong drive would not have been pleasant! If you have a spare HDD slot - get a spare identical HDD in there and set it up as a hot spare ASAP. There's no better feeling than coming into work and seeing you've had a drive faliure and the hotpsare has taken over and rebuilt the array automatically and everything is purring like a kitten - can then replace the hot spare at your leasure
IWDave Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 Indeed. Having a hot spare in each server is what I would like in an ideal world, unfortunately I have 2 spares (now 1) over 4 servers. I'll now buy another one in. Am I correct in thinking that if the Hot Spare is in the bay ready, its not spun up until needed?

It will only get used when one of the drives fail and when you replace the failing drive, and it's successfully been rebuilt, the spare drive will go back to being a spare (unused until another failure).
