Installing Apple Configurator

I've just started setting up 30 ipads and I'm sure I missing something here but I'm trying download the Apple Configurator app from the store on a macbook and it's asking for payment methods. As this app is free how do I get round this? I don't know much about ipads/macbooks and the school is hoping to use an itunes card to pay for any apps so don't want to enter a card number at this stage.

Are you setting up a new Apple ID or using an existing one for the App Store? When I did ours we had to link it to a card even though the app was free. Nothing gets charged unless you buy a paid app.

It is a new Apple ID made just for the ipads. I'm not sure the school has a credit card or at least it never the last time I asked so this might cause a problem.

You don't need to supply credit card information when creating an AppleID or when 'purchasing' a free app.
