Slideshow advice

Can someone please point me to a freeware or open source tool / code that will enable me to create a simple slideshow for a web page.

After spending the last hour googling various sites I am somewhat still left without a clue as to how is the best way of approaching this.

 

The slide show will only consist of 5 or 6 pics which will be on a front page - the pictures will be 572x429 in size and I want a nice fade in / fade out to the next picture - nothing fancy really !!

 

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
