vlan help?

Hi could someone help me.. my brain isnt working and im in need of some help..

 

im getting our internet supplier to setup a new range on our network as we will be putting the network into vlans.. they have given me a new /21 range but has asked this question....

 

"if you can let me know what subnet you are planning to use for the link segment (this will need to come out of the /21 range) and once the routing is completed I will configure the new interface with that"

 

can someone help me with what they mean?

Our LEA gave it the name 'transport VLAN'. They need to have an IP address to point all the traffic destined for your network.

 

So lets say your supplier said 10.9.8.0/21 (10.9.8.1 - 10.9.15.254)

 

You might use the following

 

10.9.8.0/24 Workstations A

10.9.9.0/24 Workstations B

10.9.10.0/24 Wifi

10.9.11.0/25 Printers

10.9.11.128/25 Servers

10.9.15.248/29 'Transport / Link Segment / ISP' VLAN

 

Then you can assign your router the address 10.9.15.249 and their router the address 10.9.15.254. You use 10.9.15.254 as your default gateway on your switch, and they fire all the returning traffic at 10.9.15.249 and your router deals with it from there.
