tickmike Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Remote Desktop Connection using 'Remmina' for my daughter to use her uni 'cloud' from home to do her work. I have to set up Server / Computer / Host name: desktop.name-changed.ac.uk Gateway: rdgateway.name-changed.ac.uk Domain: network ----------------------------------------------------- The problem there is no place to put the gateway settings. I have set up port 3389 in my firewall. Any urgent help please. PCLinuxOS 2013.12 KDE Laptop
robk Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 At a quick look, I can not see Microsoft Remote Desktop Gateway Support in the features list for Remmina, without that you will not be able to get a connection. Most Linux and Mac RDP clients do not have this, iTap and the new Microsoft variant being the ones that work for Mac/Ios/Android. Not seen a Linux one yet though.
SYNACK Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I think freerdp might support that 5 year old feature of Windows
robk Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Does freerdp work now, didn't some time ago but not looked at a Linux client for some time. The native Microsoft Mac client had the same problem. Is strange as rdp gateway is not exactly New as you say.
tickmike Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 At a quick look, I can not see Microsoft Remote Desktop Gateway Support in the features list for Remmina, without that you will not be able to get a connection. It does have it.. ! I'm trying running Win7 in 'virtualbox' the using the RDP client but still not connecting. Going to look at network/firewall permissions today.
tickmike Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 Is 443 open? Yes and I opened 3398 . I tried 'bridge' network connection in virtualbox and set up the win7 firewall and my network one. I use 'Smoothwall' as my network firewall. I also set up a win7 dual boot on the laptop, but it still will not connect when running from windows, it's got to be smoothwall !. three days doing it.!!!! She needs to do her uni work.
CAWJames Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Just to clarify, you are trying to access an RDP session on uni servers from a linux laptop? what program are you using as a RDP client? Thanks James
CAWJames Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Ah just seen Win 7 in virtualbox, Bristol University | IT Services | Remote Desktop Gateway Service see section marked manual settings, it is for Bristol uni, but it should give you the jist for a gateway connection. or see: Remote Desktop from Debian through Terminal Services Gateway | Agmosoft LLC although not sure what base PCLinuxOS is using though. Thanks James
CAWJames Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I am pretty sure Remmina does not have RDP Gateway support, as numerous tickets/forum requests are open for this feature to be added. Although not sure why Win 7 won't connect, as long as you can get general net access in a win 7 VM, RDP should work. Maybe try the above instructions on how to use the settings you have been given. You shouldn't have to open ports in your firewall, as you will be requesting outside from inside which will usually be open, you should only need to open ports if other people are accessing an RDP server in your network. Probably could have condensed 3 posts into 1, but first day back at work, and haven't yet drank my weight in caffeine James
SYNACK Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Have you got any https inspection or deep packet inspection running on the sw, this could easily break it if it is rewriting the tunnled traffic. Test by putting you windows box in front of the sw on the modem, if that does not work talk to the uni and your isp.
Domino Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 ooooh, I know the above issue seems like a networking one, but this is interesting: https://ifconfig.dk/freerdp/
computer_expert Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 is your smoothwall (express i'm guessing?) firewall policy set to half open or closed? if so you will need to allow all the ports for remote desktop gateway in the OUTBOUND rules (I haven't used smoothwall express in a while so cannot remember the exact pages/terminology - sorry!).
tickmike Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 It looks like her uni servers are down I took my daughter to her friends house and it would not work there, then she asked some of her uni mates and they said they could not get on it ..great four days wasted. I will keep you updated, thanks for advice.
tickmike Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 I contacted the head of ICT and they now find they have a external gateway problem 1
