Just taking on a new edu client and been examining the network set-up, currently a recent LA install.

 

Happened to do an nslookup from a client and spotted the domain name (private) extension is .loc

 

Just wanted peoples thoughts on this?

I think the thought nowadays is to use a 'real' domain. Eg 'ad.school.county.sch.uk'. But it was commonplace to use fake domains in the past.

 

Basically, doing this means you have proper control of the namespace - so in the case of .loc what would happen if .loc became a legit tld in the future - the network would have DNS issues for sure.

And the reason nowadays not to use .local is because bonjour doesnt like it i believe which can cause issues.

Actually I forgot to mention the domain has been labelled with the name of first.loc
