We have actually be using MineTest with some of our children as a block building game to inspire creativity during an after school club. Its pretty good and easy to customize + its free. The kids love it because it looks virtually identical.

I have put a link below for anyone interested.

Minetest

Definitely been optimised, runs better on my laptop than minecraft does. So could be good option for those with older hardware.

I get a smooth 60fps on my laptop.

I played it for a bit, did the standard minecraft stuff and tried out the mobs mod [yeah... no mobs by default.]

Seems ok.

Found Minetest via Google yesterday while looking for Minecraft alternatives for an after school club. So simple to get up and running over the network. No installation required on any machines, all local and free.

Currently running the server on an old laptop. Client is on a pupil shared drive. Pupils can connect to the world with a username of their choice and password protect, job done.

Going to stress test with more users tomorrow.

I may need you to send over any documentation you have for this.

Documentation, that is an interesting concept.

I know, right. :p

Any issues with running the server from one location and the clients on another? I was thinking of setting the server up on the server, and allowing teachers to create their own worlds for lessons.

With pupils joining lesson!worlds as needed and playing single player at lunch. [Or a non-edu shared world in their free time.]

I've heard of this. Isn't it like a plantation, but for old manuals?

I don't know... I know it needs a lot of sugar cane though. 3 canes for 3 pages.

Any mods?

I can put mods on by request I guess :) I've not used it before, but I have a spare server, or I can run it on a VM at work so it'l be on from 9:10am to 5pm everyday so you guys can have a play about

@SYSMAN_MK if you're still at work, could you run a test for me?

It needs a few computers [possibly]

Can you set up a server, connect one account to it, set up a second server and connect another account via "minetest.exe --go --name [name goes here]"

Which server does it connect to? [using --go removes pupils ability to create their own server.]

I can setup a larger server on my dedicated server when i get home if anyone wants. We have pretty much complied a list of the best mods for the job. We removed swords and turned of damage / used creative mode when we used it with kids. The coolest thing is that you can import a minecraft world using the world edit tool.

If anyone wants to see what this looks like I have imported a winter wonderland map in to minetest for a easter egg style hunt with Christmas presents .

Lol, I got lost in the mines...

Ended up with so much cobblestone that I've made a 2 story house with rooftop swimming pool. [Just need water now.]

The mobs from one of the mods look bad... so, so bad.

There is a lot of building going on. Everybody come on down to the IP address 86.27.141.47 ! and join the fun

I love the way you ignored the fact I was standing in your WOOD HOUSE holding LAVA. :p

I think, if we get enough edugeeks, you should turn off creative mode once we've set up homes.

Oops. Everyone come and experience the epicness of Minetest and see me and @X-13 's constructions. (Oh, and please dont stand in my WOOD HOUSE with LAVA).

When the server gets busier, would anyone be willing to host it as I would like it to be hosted somewhere that is not doing other things. I am writing this on the server which is my PC. I do not mean that I want someone to buy hosting for me but if someone has a server lying around that we could use.

Once again, the IP is 86.27.141.47
