Help with Ranger

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

 

Ok here goes. At a school using ranger, but not locking down desktops like it should. IT co-ord does not want it removed from the network. I want to use plain AD GPOs.

 

Is it poss to have ranger running on the clients and set everything via gpos without ranger over writing settings?

Ric did something like that once where the school liked Ranger but he did everything via GPO's. Ask him.

I would also suggest asking the Ranger people themselves. They always maintained that there should be no issues using Ranger and GP on the same system.

I did indeed have Ranger running but not actually doing much.

 

The security settings from Ranger are essentially only registry edits which is all GPOs are.

 

There are some settings present in Ranger and AD - I'm not sure which takes presidence but I would imagine it is the AD setting since this is continually updated.

 

As you start tweaking your GPOs more and more you will find that you end up not using the security settings of Ranger - at which point it isn't really cost effective anymore IMHO.

Cheers for the info guys. After reading through a few KB articles on their website, it seems you can turn off the policies of ranger by having the options greyed out rather than ticked. Ala Poledit stylee.

 

The problem I know have though is on a desktop not running Ranger I can have the XP style Start Menu and theme, set via GPO. But on the PC running Ranger it defaults to the Classic Start Menu and theme.

 

Ranger is the only difference. :?

We use ranger but don't touch any of the stuff that can be done better using GPO settings. We have fisher price settings working fine.

 

I would try creating a new security group in AD add it to ranger and move to the top of it's list (ranger administrator settings groups) add a user to the list and see if you get the same issue. If so it must be in the all user enviorment settings some where.

 

I must admin I like rangers ability to shut down a open window based on title bar it enables the use of software for genuine work but stops it when it sees a title I've banned.
