Kindle, tablet opinions?

Hi all, my mum has mentioned that she might like a Kindle for xmas. I know nothing about them really so just wondered about some opinions.

I think she would like something that she could do a bit of web browsing on as well so are the 3G versions worth it?

With the web requirement in mind would a tablet with Kindle reader be a better bet?

Does it have to be a Kindle? The reason I ask is because many libraries lend eBooks, but if Kent is anything to go by, they are not compatible with Kindle.

 

I was given a Kindle, but if I were to buy one would probably go with one of the others that can handle the Epub format.

Hudl for internet browsing? Its cheap and cheerful.

 

Currently looking at tablets for students and certainly a lot of choices out there.

My mom has just got a Kindle Fire and personally, I'd avoid them (only the tablets though, love "classic" Kindles). Simple reason being that Google Play Store isn't on them, so you're stuck using Amazon's own app store which apart from lacking a load of useful apps (Google Drive being one for starters!) is full of paid for apps that are free on the Play Store (not the exact apps but the only equivalent you can get).

 

You can sideload apps on of course, but I'm guessing your mom isn't technically minded enough to do that (please excuse me if I assume wrong!), plus it voids your warranty.

 

Oh, and there are adverts on the lock screen. Ads on a device I paid good money for? Not for me, thanks.

 

Add to that the fact the only thing Kindle about it is the Kindle app, which is available for free on any Android tablet with access to the Play Store, and I think they're pretty much the worst of all worlds.

My brother's got one, I'm not a fan of the interface at all. It really depends what the main purpose of it is, I've got the classic Kindle and love it for reading books and find it much less strain on the eyes than reading off a screen. As stated above, the kindle App is available on Android and IOS devices which gives you access to all your kindle purchases.

only if you buy with ads, you can buy without. I bought my son a Kindle fire for Christmas last year, and for what he uses it for its a lovely little tablet. If you like book reading though the classis kindle is better for that.

I love my Kindle Fire been one of the best things I have had in a while. I can talk to my son on Skype etc. I also love the screen for reading as when am away in the van it means not having to find a torch or light in the dark lol

 

As a wee aside you can put epubs onto it and they read fine. But you need to have the epub on your HDD and pull them over onto the kindle.

Hmm well I think she's just after an ereader with back light now. Is the Nook locked to the Barnes and Noble store or can it use Amazon etc?
