abillybob Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Hey Guys I am having an issue with one of the staff laptops and I can't for the hell of me figure out what is going on. It loads websites REAAAAAL slow. I have tried Cleaning the temporary files with Ccleaner and cleaned the registry! There's nothing strange starting up when the PC starts up and it's a fast machine. I looked in Event Viewer and I see this only Error every hour it seems A fatal hardware error has occurred. Reported by component: Processor Core Error Source: Machine Check Exception Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error Processor ID: 0 The details view of this entry contains further information. Anyone Have a clue what this is, I hope the processor hasn't died or dying....
Grey-gear Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Not sure if I can help but: - - Have you tried a differnet browser? - Have you tried disable any none basic pluggins? - Is the Broeser(s) that are being used upto date? - Have you tried unistalling the browser then reinstalling it? Sorry if you already done these but this all I can think off of the top of my head.
abillybob Posted December 3, 2013 Author Posted December 3, 2013 Thanks matey, but I tried all of that. Could it be to do with the error on event viewer do you happen to know what it means??
Grey-gear Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 CPU could be over heating maybe, is the cpu fan working? Or has it been overclocked (I'm guessing no for this but you never know)?
newpersn Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 AMD? Have a look here AMD Cache Hierarchy Error
abillybob Posted December 3, 2013 Author Posted December 3, 2013 Nope believe it or not it's a beasty Intel i7 Hexacore processor (the head teachers obviously) It hasn't been overclocked, nothing I can see in the BIOS although how can I tell if it was over heating I always though it a CPU got to hot the computer restarted itself???
allanlinwood Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 This may seem a bit simplistic; but I assume you have an image of these laptops? Have you tried a fresh image to save time figuring out all the other possibilities. If you are still having problems after that, then you know you have a hardware issue.
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Yeah tried the fresh image today still slow as hell. My ping is at 175ms and it took ages to do the test on speedtest.net with a download speed of 1.6mbps although the MacBook next to me will get 9mbps 10ms ping hmmmm. :/
ZeroHour Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Have you tested the ram yet? I have seen very weird things happen with a dead dimm/slot
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Its even worse here just times out what the hell is going on grrrr !!!!
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 I left the machines on overnight doing a full system diagnostics check and it completed everything. So I can't see it being a hardware issue or if it is there is nothing seeing it. :/
ZeroHour Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I left the machines on overnight doing a full system diagnostics check and it completed everything. So I can't see it being a hardware issue or if it is there is nothing seeing it. :/ Just to confirm, that did include a ram test? Windows 7 onwards have a built in memory tester as well. Are both wired/wireless slow?
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Internally everything is fine, websites load real quick as long as he server is inside the school and everything it's only when I try to go to a website such as google is when it goes real slow!!!
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Yes both wired and wireless are slow and the test was first the windows mem test and the other was Dell diagnostics which stress test every component and it passed everything *scratches head*
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Even www.edugeek.net ping says request timed out even though I'm on the edugeek website on this machine what on earth!
ZeroHour Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Those answers help and eliminate a lot of possibilities. I presume any other machines inside the network ping edugeek/external fine? Another test to try, copy a large file (1gb ideally) onto a usb stick, copy the file to a working machines hard disk and note the time (the machines should be ideally the same model) then repeat on the borked machine. Just curious if its something motherboard/system driver related.
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Please someone help me, I recommended this laptop to her it was the new Dell XPS machines as it was the fastest computer I could find and I feel as if it's my fault it's going wrong she doesn't look to please either *sigh*
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Ah thanks mate will give it a go all the other machines are pinging fine and the other machines are getting a good result in speed test
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 @ZeroHour Nope copied actually quicker as the other machine tried it on identical machines :/
ZeroHour Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Right next step, get a bootable linux iso and see if ping works then using wired.
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Ok will do sorry about slow reply the boss came in and started talking to me for an hour -.-
abillybob Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 OMG! So the ping is our broadband team blocking filtered machines and other which are unfiltered are fine and can ping so the server can ping! You learn something new everyday. Still doesn't explain why this machine is loading webpages dead slow though. I thought I was onto something there!!
the_one_that_cant Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Check to see if there is nothing dodgy/suspicious in the host file maybe? How can I reset the Hosts file back to the default?
