Hi everyone,

This summer we become proud owners of brand new shining Ruckus system (Zonedirector 3000 and 7363 Aps), it was very reasonably priced, easy to install and set up and I really cannot praise it enough! It is a huge improvement from old HP system and we finally joined 21 century.

Couple of weeks ago I set up a Guest WLAN (for internet access only). Pushed proxy settings with wpad.dat file, it works fine on all devices we tried (Windows, android and iPhone) except we cannot access any secure (https) sites with Android (Windows works fine and we haven’t tried Apple yet) and we cannot access Google Play either. As we have few Android tablets knocking around the school so it is quite important for it to be resolved, it used to work fine with old HP system (well, when it was working), so I don't think it's our Smoothwall. I looked through Ruckus configuration and could not find an obvious solution. Just wondering if anybody had come across it or can share some ideas on how to solve this.

Thank you.

I take that no one has an idea. I have removed wpad.dat from Ruckus and after connecting to the wireless configured proxy settings manually but still no change.

Can someone tell me if you have Ruckus, that your Android devices can connect to Play and https?

Thanks.

Hi, Sorry I don't think I can help as we don't use Ruckus / Smoothwall here. I am interested in something you wrote though...

Firstly you should know I have limited knowledge of networking, proxy servers etc. - We have been experimenting with a few Android (4.2) tablets here for the last 6 months and we have an RM Smartcache proxy and a PAC file on our server - The only way I have been able to configure the proxy settings on these tablets is manually on each device as they do not support proxy autoconfig I think. Are you saying that by using a WPAD file this is possible and that Android will then autoconfigure the proxy settings? If so I will read up on this..

Thanks, but I think I’ve cracked it. There are couple of problems. First, it was Smoothwall – looking at the logs there were no errors or blocked sites showing when trying to connect to Google Play. Two minutes of Smoothwal support guy and all is working but only using manual proxy settings. This brings us to the second problem; my wpad.dat is clearly not working properly, so will have to try and fix it.
