It's much easier and cheaper to get a cnc mill that could mill a gun from a billet block rather than 3d print in metal.

 

Being able to 3d print/mill etc.... doesn't change anything most people could make a firearm in their shed/garage with bits and pieces.

Apart from the fact that someone requires no skill to click print as opposed to free form the gun from raw materials....

That is completely un-true plus the fact that the metal capable printers cost 10's if not 100's of thousands of pounds.

 

Even printing things with 3d plastic printers needs skill and experience it's not a click print and forget affair at the moment so don't be so naïve.

Its like comparing putting together parts from Ikea to building your own cupboard!

 

 

I am not sure it really makes the world more dangerous, if someone wanted one of these things, they would get one printer or no printer. However, it is silly to say that milling your own weapons is simpler than getting blueprints and printing them is silly!!

If you read what I put I didn't actually say that milling a gun was simpler I said that getting a cnc mill that was capable of producing a firearm was easier and cheaper than the 3D printer that would be required not quite the same thing is it?

According to El Reg "The final object is then heat-treated and polished before use." which i expect needs quite a bit of specialised equipment.

 

Oh, and you can't print bullets, so it would be a very expensive paperweight ;)

If you listen to the video too you will see the firer mentions that they had to buy in the springs.

You should also note that modern firearms are made from alloys and many parts have specialist coatings. Whilst the video shows teh pistol shooting, I doubt that it would remain fire-able for very long before a single part fails due to stress.

Get in, now i can go shoot people who annoy me! Lack of a 3d printed gun has been the only thing stopping me...

length of pipe and a firework would probably make a reasonable weapon not a gun perse but could possible do more damage

It was a demonstration of 3D printing capability for industrial use, not home. A gun happens to be a complex device that can generate a lot of publicity. The power requirements alone would soon make a weapons printing factory in a terraced street visible to the right people.

Yep. Guns are pretty simple devices. You don't even need to muck about with black powder, cordite or other 'explosives'. Some snipers in WWI used air rifles.

As sickipedia said, it's cheaper to buy an AK47 than to buy the HP cartridges to print your own.

HP inkjet carts are used in the "gypsum" powder type 3D printers and whilst I guess you could print in powder and then use that to cast in metal it's a bit of a stretch.

The first non-prototype-metal printer I could find US$ 750,000 approx. There are cheaper metal printers but these cant print in stainless steel only a cheaper weaker alloy.

Plus materials/power/misc = $5,000

 

So thats $755,000 or £471,573.20 BEFORE you even start to print.

 

Lets assume (big assumption as I have no idea if this is true) you can buy a hand gun for £100.

 

Hmmmmm everybody panic, criminals can print guns!!

I imagine a box of fireworks (£10ish), a steel tube (£5 at most) and some fishing shot (£2) could make you a pretty deadly shotgun. I'm not going to lose any sleep over this "news"
