I use nagios and cacti. You can hook the prior into whatever notification system you want really, such as SMS messaging, email, jabber messaging etc...

 

They are free and take minimal work to set up IMO. There are some instructions around on the forums which go into good detail on how to set up nagios.

Restricted to servers but we have just found spot light (http://www.quest.com/spotlight-on-windows/) from the people that made Big Brother. graphs everything you could possibly think of and a lot you never even knew. Everything can be drilled down into even more information and graphs. Very graphical and very pretty. No client needed either.
