can't upgrade to windows 8.1

i have 2 macs both run fusion, both have VM's which started as windows 7 then upgraded to windows 8 both the same spec but one won't upgrade it just goes to a recovery console and i get a error of 0x1900101-0x20017, and the message you computer has been rolled back to its previous OS(windows 8). i've tried giving the VM more space, uninstalling the fusion drivers. i've does a reset which deleted all files and and programs and tried upgrading and still nothing.

Any ideas?

Which version of Fusion are you using? v6.0?

 

Prior to upgrading to 8.1, did you install all of the latest Windows Updates?

No I'm on what ever the latest version of v5 is, i'm just think about upgrading to V6 but one VM has already upgraded fine. All updates have been applied.

ok just upgraded to versions 6 of fusion in 10 mins were find out.

If that doesn't work, you could try downloading the 8.1 ISO and using that to upgrade the VM.

i did think of that but i heard that Microsoft block any key which is windows 8 that used to activate against windows 8.1 iso unless that was just for leaked betas Edited October 20, 2013 by andy_nic

so far that working its downloading the 8.1 iso i think.

You probably need to use the relevant default product key to install. i.e.

 

Core:          334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT 
Professional:  XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

 

Once 8.1 is installed, you enter your own key to activate.

I'm almost certain something is a little wonky with store upgrades. Not had an issue in testing with any ISO upgrade (and hence all Enterprise upgrades OK) yet so many people reporting app/program/setting/profile issues etc or random glitches with store upgraded versions. May be coincidental but will be doing further testing later.

The thing i don't get is why can't you use a iso of windows 8.1 with a 8 key to upgrade its free upgrade. so if i have to reactivate a windows 8.1 which i have already upgraded does that mean my key which will be 8 won't work? of course it will work. 2 days i've been trying to get this to work, i don't really want to have to build it back from windows 7 back to 8 then 8.1 and i'm not paying £189 for the full windows 8.1 retail one.

Unfortunately Microsoft do not want non-enterprise Windows 8 users downloading ISOs.

 

I've had a few users ask whether Microsoft plans to make Media (.ISO) updates available to the general public for Windows 8.1. The answer is no.

 

A spokesperson noted that the only way to update a retail-activated Windows 8 computer to Windows 8.1 will be to go through the Windows Store and download the updated bits. However, .ISO-based updates will be supported for volume-license installations (as well as for TechNet, MSDN and DreamSpark subscribers).

 

Why isn't Microsoft making the .ISO files broadly available for Windows 8.1? Another spokesperson told me it's because "8.1 was intended as an update for users with Windows 8 already installed." I know Windows Store downloads have been problematic for a number of users and spotty Internet has made downloading from the Store a challenge for some (especially outside the U.S.). But that's all Microsoft officials are saying right now about .ISOs. (Source)

 

The only way to obtain an 8.1 ISO is to use the method described above or via TechNet/MSDN if you have a subscription.

Microsoft have now locked my key out and want me to buy a new one, i'll just downgrade it 7 and key which should still work.

i restored a previous fusion image file and windows was activated. so expanded the image file took the .vhdx file out rebuilt the fusion image file expanded the drive to 200GB even though it only had windows and updates on it was at 120. Deleted the Windows BT folder in C:\ as it doesn't clean up failed attempts very well and tried again and it upgrading now.
