I am looking at alternative web filtering solutions and have been looking at Zentyal and ClearOS (formerly ClarkConnect)

On looking at how well both products integrate with AD for user/group policies I decided to look at ClearOS. There is a Community and Pro edition but went for the Pro edition evaluation as it integrated into AD with minimal setup. Zentyal does integrate but seemed to imply every user would need to reset their passwords. Zentyal integration is also free.

Making great progress with ClearOS and it has integrated to our AD without issue. Both system essentially give you a front end to squid and dansguardian. Both system can pull updates for urls/blacklists etc.

So we are going to to give ClearOS a full trial and see if it can meet our requirements. Both systems can also provide firewalling, VPN, Mail etc but we only want to use the Content Filtering.

Anyone else used/using Zentyal or ClearOS

Yes I have looked at Untangle. We are in the process of simplifying our network which would make Untangle more viable as a transparent bridge.

We already have a firewall and getting it to integrate to our existed routed internal network was fun in that it brought the network down!

So not really been able to test Untangle in a meaningful way.

We use untangle on our byod network and getting it to work took a bit of time, but was well worth it. We use Bloxx on the school side as a proxy and the untangle as a transparent on the BYOD.
