What cards have y'all got in your servers - 1GbE, 10GbE, fibre cards...?

We've shifted from 1GbE to 10GbE this summer, with a new server infrastructure. So, from physical for everything to a virtualised infrastructure with shared storage.

 

Ok, we're only hitting about 15% usage on any of the links at one time, but that will increase.

 

Cost to do so was minimal, compared to the costs of the servers and storage (we spent about £20k on the servers, and 10k on the storage). The servers have 10GbE built in, a module for our core was about £1800 and the cables were £200 each, so £2600. Less than 10% of the cost.

We're seeing a gradual shift from multiple 1Gb/s links over to 10GbE on our virtual hosts to reduce port numbers and increase flexibility around 802.1q VLAN tagging without increasing physical ports.

 

Whilst it means implementing 10GbE switching at an expense it is a reduction in overall switch port requirements and in turn leads to reduced costs elsewhere in cabling.
