cra234 Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 I looking to upgrade our file server, we have a tight budget. What is the min specification for the HP server? thanks
sted Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 you could probably get away with the new g8 microserver for 40 users if its just a file dump and dc
elsiegee40 Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 It's probably easier for you to work out the best spec that you can afford and then ask us if it will do the job.
twin--turbo Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Unless you have a shead load of data $4K will get you a very very long way. I specced a Dual Xeon e5-2600 32G ram and a couple of TB of disk space for that last week for a shade under £4K and that was to be a virtual server hypervisor. Could easily run a fistfull of virtual hosts. So realy you need to look at how much data there is and how much is beeing shoveled arround at any one time. TT
dhicks Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 DC and file server As has already been mentioned above, for $4,000 you should easily be able to buy a sizeable server capable of running several virtual machines, so you can have one VM for your DC and one for your file server. Depending on the capabilities of the virtualisation system you're using, I'd say split the storage into at least two arrays. One array of high-performance disks to run the virtualisation system itself and the main DC and file server disk images, and one array passed directly to the file server VM to do the file storage on. You could go for a third array of slower, cheaper, larger drives, too - we've recently done this with 4TB drives.

twin--turbo Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 If you have a decent next day warranty and a decent backup then run raid 5 on just 3 1TB drives. Rob
