Epson Projector - VPL-ES2 (will not turn on when power has been left off for a while)

Hi All,

 

Don't know if this post is best here or AV thread.... (MOD please move if you feel it appropriate).

 

After being switched off at the socket over the holidays, a few of these projectors failed to switch back on at the start of term.

 

However, after a couple of hours they miraculously come to life.

 

I have noticed this has become the norm for a few of these projectors now, when they are switched of at the wall socket they will refuse to power on unless they are left with power on for a while.

 

I think this might be power supply related...

 

Any ideas?

I've seen this issue quite a lot over the years with switch mode power supplies in various computers and related devices. Components can fail over time with heat and age and once cooled down do not perform. Commonly electrolytic capacitors dry out and fail in power supplies often indicated by bulging or splitting tops on their metal case. Other components too may suffer with age and heat. If totally dead for a while I would suspect this sort of failure is developing with the main power supply. Probably a common failure for that make if a number the same are suffering.

A range of early Hitachi engined projectors we had also used to suffer similar with the lamp ballast unit which provides high voltage to strike the lamp. Once disconnected from mains for a while the projector would power up but the lamp would no longer light. Sometimes recovering after being powered on for a while.
