It could be his travel costs are paid for by the company. I live in Brum, but I used to work in Bristol and with company car and petrol, the 85 mile journey was OK. Journey time was quick too, generally under an hour. I knew where every camera car on the M5 was. The guys who worked in Weston Super Mare were taking 50 minutes for their journey.

In a previous job I commuted between Edinburgh & Newcastle for 6 months, I used the time on the train to sleep

If he was my employee, I would now be seriously worried about paying out all the expenditure on his travel - reality tells you as soon as he gets his first decent paycheck from the books, he will drop IT quicker than a flash. Find him a broom cupboard in Edinburgh with a decent connection speed and a VPN account lol until he hands his notice in lol.
