Running Duel ISP's on one network

I currently have a Local council connection of only 1.8 Mb/s and there is no chance of any faster speed in the future. The local houses are getting over 10 Mb/s speed. So i was wondering if is possible to run 2 ISP's on one network info structure. the council one for sims and other data to be transfered another ISP for everyone to use for day to day internet use. I will have to look into filtering aswel. Any help would be much appreciated.

We used to have a similar setup with our secure connection to NHS and a Virgin Media connection for everything else. We used Watchguard firewall and had both coming in and then routed various traffic to the various connections.

If you have set destinations this can be done over a router, next hop to council ip range = council router, default route =decent filtered connection. I'd check with the council though as chances are they have a non-compete/'security' clause that means you can't be connected to their slow network and the comparatively fast network at the same time because it would make the, look bad... I mean compromise security... Both are in fact true in some cases. Edited September 18, 2013 by SYNACK

Yup - Implemented this lots of times, fairly straight forward.

hi @RiversideICT,

 

you just need a firewall for the other connection that's also plugged into your local LAN.

 

Give that device an IP address on your local network and make all your computers / PC's etc to have the default route to be this.

 

You can then either put a static route on that firewall saying for traffic to the council network (e.g.10.10.0.0/16) send it to the IP address of the councils current router /gateway.

 

Alternatively put a separate route on all computers to do the same thing.
