Migration from 2008 R2 to 2012 Essentials

Hi guys and gals,

 

as the title says im migrating from 2008 R2 to 2012 Essentials, or rather researching so that at the end of the week I can go ahead. I have seen videos of 2008 DC's being completely migrated to 2012 using powershell tools, this includes roles, files and folders, users etc. My concern is that our folder re-direction for start menus and profiles are held on the DC's as are the shares in which they reside, would all of those be migrated to the new server ? or once I've built 2012 and got all the roles etc migrated could I then demote my 2008 server and just use it for the the re-direction shares so users stay on the same server ?

If it was me I would dcpromo the 2012 server up, get it working turn off old one and check all is ok, transfer over any shares, fire old one up, let it replicate over, dcpromo it down and then do as you please.
