Disable right click context on 'Start Menu' 'All Programs @

Hi all.

 

Does anybody know how to stop student users from right clicking the start menu all programs item as when they do they get the option to explore the start menu. If you choose explore then they get a network browse window and they can see all of my domain and start menu structure ( start menus are on my server )

 

Surely this is in Group Policy?

I have had this problem too, but as yet not found a cure for it

All other right clicks are disabled, so guess Microsoft "forgot" about this one

 

had to revert back to the "Classic" style until i can resolve this.

what version of Windows XP is ths media cenre i take it this is your home PC?

Dunno whether you already have this set on your policy or not, and it's just a bug within the program?

 

But can't you use:

 

User Config -> Admin Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar -> Remove Drag-and-drop context menus on the Start Menu

 

Set this to enabled. Normally stops right clicking on the start menu. But I don't use the new version of start menu, prefer the classic personally, so have all the computers set to the classic

Hi, it's a shame you can't stop this! I have disabled every other right click but still found this one to be active. :-(

You locked down your users, only to find that they can double-click the Programs item on the Start menu and open Windows Explorer.

 

To prevent this behavior:

Hi All

 

I've experienced the same problem with users being able to double click on programs in the Start menu and subsequently browse some network shares. I have already tied down all the gpo's that apply to right clicking on the start menu.

 

The post by rvdmast works very well for the current user but does anyone know how to apply that to all users?

 

Any help would be extremely appreciated

If you're running a mandatory profile, you can incorporate those registry changes in the registry hive (ntuser.man) within the profile.

ive just tested that reg fix and it works well, too well. For each user we have two shortcuts on their desktop, one pointing to a shared public folder and a second one for their own personal folder. With this fix in place users are prevented from running the shortcuts.

 

Anyone got any ideas as to how to get round this? Can open ie, shortcut for owa ok but not these 2 shortcuts.

 

the reg fix drops the file association for explorer and folders and this is what is causing the problems with these shortcuts.

error is "File does not have a program associated with it for performing this action, please create an association...."

 

im stuck.. would love to use this fix but cant for obvious reasons..

any one else came across this?

Came across this thread while having the same issue.

The group policy we are looking for is PREVENT USERS FROM CUSTOMIZING START SCREEN

It's it admin templates start menu / task bar
