Site Code and Name

Hi all,

I’m installing SCCM 2012 sp1 as a standalone and got to the point where i need to put a site code and name in, we had before i started sccm 2007 also stand alone but yesterday i uninstalled and decommissioned the server forgetting to note the name used, is it ok to use the same site code and name as previous install on a different server? I don’t know if I am using a different name/code or not.

Also the installer says “The site code must be unique in the configuration manager hierarchy and cannot be changed after install.” But I’m not installing in to a hierarchy I am doing standalone.

 

i'm leaning towards i'm ok to use the same name and code

It depends.

 

Are the two going to co-exist at any point? If so, you'll need to use a new site code for the 2012 farm. If you've blatted your 2007 farm and removed its information from the System Management container in AD, you'll be OK.

its turned off at the moment, the plan was to start a fresh with the 2012 one. do you know of anythink i need to clean up to remove the old one? i also don't know how much the old one was used. i only started in this place 4 weeks ago. do i need to remove the permissons for the old one in AD in the system managent folder. also the old one was just a primary server and the new one is going to be the same.

If you old SCCM server is gone and not coming back on its OK to reuse the site code. You wont be able to have both on at the same time with the same codes.

Personally I wouldn't use the same code. I'm sure it's perfectly possible to reuse codes after going through AD etc removing anything referencing the old set up but at the back of my head they'd always be that little niggling doubt that I'd probably forgotten something. On top of that I'd always be concerned that every time there was an error or strange behaviour I couldn't explain that I'd be drawn to the fact it might be because I'd missed something... but then again I normally urge on the side of caution so it might just be me.

is there anyway of find out what the code was without having to turn the old server back on? but i don't mind using a new one but i don't know the old one. i think the old one was as far as installed and that was it.

Yer look at a computer that has the SCCM client installed. Under Control Panel > Configuration Manager > General Tab

In "Active Directory Users and Computers" if you look under System > System Management then you should find an entry called SMS-Site-XXX where XXX is the site code.

 

You'll probably need "advanced features" ticked under the "view" menu to find this.

found it in control panel, but my system management container is empty.
