Arthur Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) It's looking like Google do not want you to be able to stream your own content to the Chromecast. Not good! Google blocks Chromecast app that let you stream your own videos « The Verge Google's latest Chromecast update intentionally breaks AllCast. They disabled 'video_playback' support from the ChromeCast application. Given that this is the second time they've purposefully removed/disabled the ability to play media from external sources, it confirms some of my suspicions that I have had about the Chromecast developer program: The policy seems to be a heavy handed approach, where only approved content will be played through the device. The Chromecast will probably not be indie developer friendly. The Google TV team will likely only whitelist media companies. I'd strongly suggest holding off on buying a Chromecast until we can see how Google chooses to move forward on third party applications. There are also other (open) platforms and stacks that one could buy/support as well. (LeapCast, NodeCast, etc.) (Source) Edited August 25, 2013 by Arthur
CyberNerd Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Apparently this was due to an SDK change to be fixed in the near future: Confirmed: ChromeCast will be able to play local content, go ahead and order yours | Muktware
Arthur Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 to be fixed in the near future It doesn't sound like it will be fixed. We’re excited to bring more content to Chromecast and would like to support all types of apps, including those for local content. It’s still early days for the Google Cast SDK, which we just released in developer preview for early development and testing only. We expect that the SDK will continue to change before we launch out of developer preview, and want to provide a great experience for users and developers before making the SDK and additional apps more broadly available. CyberNerd Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 I must be reading that paragraph differently from you then. I read it as Google saying it was a change in a brand new and undocumented api that was on developmental pre-release and they'd like to support all types of apps including local content, so presumably if they would like that to happen then they would make it happen when they release teh final SDK.
Arthur Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 they'd like to support all types of apps including local content 'Like' being the operative word. There isn't anything in Google's statement that says they definitely will support local content. It's completely non-committal. What doesn't make sense is why would Google add the code shown below after they had already sold hundreds of thousands of Chromecasts. Why not disable the ability to play local content from the start given the current state of the SDK (and to prevent certain developers from reverse engineering the Google Cast protocol)? http://i.imgur.com/dCMw1Tx.png
CyberNerd Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 who knows. Maybe it wasn't working properly? Perhaps there was an exploit in it? I don't see what they would have against local streaming or why they say they would like to support it if they have no intention of doing so. I think we'll have to wait for the final release to know for sure.
Arthur Posted August 30, 2013 Author Posted August 30, 2013 Pocket Casts to support Chromecast, as soon as Google allows it
Arthur Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 The Android and iOS Chromecast apps are now available to download outside of the US. I wonder if this means Google will be releasing the Chromecast internationally soon? Ant Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I recently bought one on Amazon for £38. Took a gamble on cost really as it'll probably be cheaper when it finally gets released here. Having played with it for a few weeks now, it is at this moment a very limited device, BUT we already knew that. What it does do, Google Play, YouTube and Netflix, it does very well. Extremely easy to use, and far easier than using the clunky controls of my smart TVs (Sony & Samsung). I read this on Engadget the other day. Hopefully we'll start seeing some more apps being made available, such as AirCast, soon. Potential is still high, just a shame we're having to wait so long to see it!
Arthur Posted December 10, 2013 Author Posted December 10, 2013 (edited) Hopefully we'll start seeing some more apps being made available Plex now works with Chromecast (along with several other new apps). Arthur Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 About time! Chromecast now open to developers with the Google Cast SDK « Google Developers Blog Back in July we announced the developer preview of the Google Cast Software Development Kit (SDK), the underlying Chromecast technology that enables multi-screen experiences across mobile devices (phones, tablet, laptops) and large-screen displays. Starting today, the Google Cast SDK is available for developing and publishing Google Cast-ready apps. The Google Cast SDK is simple to integrate because there’s no need to write a new app. Just incorporate the SDK into your existing mobile and web apps to bring your content to the TV. You are in control of how and when you develop and publish your cast-ready apps through the Google Cast developer console. The SDK is available on Android and iOS as well as on Chrome through the Google Cast browser extension.
pr1vate_piles Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Glad to hear there is a plex app for chromecast. Use plex a lot and really like the interface. Hmm, may order one to have a play.
Ant Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Anyone else notice all of the Chromecasts (US imports) from all sellers have been pulled from Amazon.co.uk? Was just looking to buy another one and they're all gone. Even trying to link from my past orders brings up an error. Interesting...
Arthur Posted February 5, 2014 Author Posted February 5, 2014 I remember reading something a week or two ago that said Google asked Amazon to remove all Chromecasts from their UK website. It must mean an international release is close?
Arthur Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 Google's Chromecast expected to come to the UK in March « Engadget
Arthur Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 UK Stores Begin Receiving Chromecast Stock « OMG Chrome! / Twitter “Looks like Google Chromecast will be available to buy in UK stores very soon! Not on the system yet so price isn’t showing up. Just received a full box with Chromecast.” Plex Chromecast Support Is Now Free For Everyone, App Still Costs $5 (£2.98) For Non-Subscribers « Android Police Chromecast support came a little early to the Plex app, but it also came with a catch – only premium PlexPass subscribers could use it. That was only a temporary situation, as the developers added features and improved the feature. Now the preview period is over and everyone can enjoy Plex's excellent content streaming with Chromecast support without a subscription.
Soulfish Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Ohh been waiting for UK release of the Chromecast to use with Plex
Arthur Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) The official release date is either 19th March or 25th March apparently. Edited March 14, 2014 by Arthur
Arthur Posted March 15, 2014 Author Posted March 15, 2014 No indication of pricing yet? If the European price of €35 is accurate, it will probably cost £29.99 in the UK.
