I have 178MB free on Drive C: on my main DC.

 

is it going to cause me any problems if I run Disk Cleanup or CCleaner on that drive ?

 

I have my user profiles stored on an independent drive from C: so it shouldn't effect those but ... is it going to break something ?

Not something I would do. I think Microsoft have a list of things that can be deleted from the DC c drive safely. If it was me I would be working out a way of re sizing the disk or rebuilding the server so it has lots of space.

Well I was going to expand drive C: by 200 gig, in VMWare I have attached and assigned the storage to the server but the the expand button on drive C: is greyed out so Im guessing it cant be done!

I've run cleanmgr on DC's plenty of times - I inherited a 2003 DC that had a 12GB partition for its C drive. Brilliant.

In VMware, could you not clone the DC's hard drive into a fresh VM but with a larger hard drive?

Once you've done that then you need to rescan the disks from the Disk Management snapin - you should then see unallocated space at the end of the drive, and you'll be able to extend C: into it.

I have done that - I have the unallocated space waiting... But C: wont let me extend - upon right click the option to expand is greyed out.

Yes, although the options are greyed out for making Disk 1 bigger, possibly because the machine is on or it could be because this machine was migrated from a physical to a virtual.

 

Ill power it down tonight and try it again tonight when everyone has gone home.

We have recently had to increase the size of the drives on a number of our virtual servers. We were pointed to the ExtPart utility on the Dell website. It's a command line tool that expands the drive to utilise unused space on the fly.

 

Just add more space in vm, than run this tool and you're done.

You can also use the diskpart command line utility to do it quickly but if it is the system disk - which it is - you would need to do it 'offline' by booting into a command shell like windows pe from a windows disk or a ads server. You can then just select the drive, then partition and type expand which will expand the filesystem to use the available size, usually takes just a few seconds to run the command.

You sure can; I've had to expand the boot volume with diskpart on a couple of servers this year alone. The only trick is to boot up with WinPE first - just like @SYNACK has already stated.
