First off, apologies if this is covered on another thread - I can't find it if it is.

We are having problems with the new Outlook Web App as part of the Office 365 email experience. It appears to suffer from some kind of memory leak! Over the course of a couple of hours, if the page is left open it can consume up to 2Gb RAM or more!!! Surely this can't be right?

We are getting this on a mixture of XP and 7 machines and also with versions of Internet Explorer from 8 up to, and including 10. Is there a fix for this?? Please say yes as the dramatic PC slowdown caused by the memory hogging email is starting to really annoy staff!!

Cheers

We're having the same issue at our school, just seems to be when you login to outlook the iexplorer.exe process goes into overdrive and just devours all of the memory.

If anyone has the solution to this problem it would be appreciated greatly because it's driving our staff insane!!

The problem here seems to have largely gone away nowadays. However, we have completely removed all traces of Windows XP from the network and are using a mixture of IE10 and IE11. All machines have at the absolute minimum 2Gb of RAM but majority have 4Gb now.

Have you tried a few people with Firefox as an alternative?

Most of our machines are running Windows 7 and most have around 2 to 4gb of RAM.

We've been using Firefox as an alternative on some machines, we've contacted Microsoft about the issue and they've changed the OWA to the light version as a temp fix.

We're awaiting a call back from them today.

We are using IE11.

Most of our Teacher PCs have 2gb RAM or more.

We've never had the problem before...until MS 'Upgraded' Office 365 in some way over the Summer...:(

Now its driving us MAD!!!

In addition, we've started using a thing called Class Charts (Class Charts - seating plans and behaviour management software) from September and I think that isn't helping.

If I upgrade the RAM (to 4gb) on an affected PC then the problem vanishes.

If I cannot find any other fix then we may have to add extra RAM to all of our Teacher PCs sooner rather than later!!!

Make sure the users dont have loads of emails in deleted items.

I just came across this and the user had 5,000 emails waiting to be deleted.

Interesting, did clearing out the deleted items improve performance then? I think our default delete policy is quite long (6 months maybe?) so stuff could sit there for quite a while!!

Its a cheaper option :) Provided you have Outlook installed that is. Not really sure what else to suggest, unless you can disable/switch off that Class Charts thing?

The school has 'bought-in' to Class Charts in a big way, so that's not likely. Anyway, I am pretty sure that the culprit is Office 365 (OWA), as Class Charts is just a pretty bog-standard web site and other (non-teaching) users (who don't use Class Charts) have been reporting 'slowness' as well.

I need to do a bit of head scratching I think!!

We installed a clean copy of Windows on a PC without any updates installed and the OWA ran fine, memory usage was normal.

Maybe it's a specific update? But which one??!

On this clean install, which version of IE was in use?

It just fixed the memory usage on a PC I got called out for. Not sure if its could explain your global problem though.
