flashsnaps Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Hi all, Just pricing up Smoothwall for 50 PC's for our school, this is the pricing. £1500/year for the box (no support, just updates) £600/year for content filtering (50 PC's) £300/year for expedited warranty, under standard warranty it could take over a week to replace Education services agreement, £600! which is support for the year, not unlimited either. £900 for training onsite I don't think I would mind if all these "extras" where included in the price, but the fact they're adding them on frustrates me. Smoothwall is open source, so what's stopping me from just using my own box and installing it?
sparkeh Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 (edited) Unless I am grossly misunderstanding, the open source smoothwall (smoothwall express) does not do web filtering, only firewalling (is that a word?). http://www.smoothwall.org/about/feature-comparison-chart/ You can get the software version of Guardian (filtering product) to install on your hardware but that has a cost. http://www.smoothwall.net/product-library/guardian-web-filter/ Edited July 5, 2013 by sparkeh
daveyboy Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 @sparkeh check out :- URL filter add-on for IPCop and SmoothWall Advanced Proxy add-on for IPCop and SmoothWall
Gaz Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Smoothwall is open source, so what's stopping me from just using my own box and installing it? Nothing! buy the software version of Smoothwall, save yourself £1800(expedited price included) and stick it on an old server or a fast PC with a decent network card in it. You could build a decent system to run it on for about £500 for 50 users.
