Strange connection problems

I've moved into a new house share where the net connection is provided by a Netgear DG834GT wireless router provided by the ISP. Now there is very good signal strength throughout the house but there seems to be a problem when connecting over wireless.

 

A lot of the time the connection constantly drops for no reason or you cannot connect to it at all. There is only one machine that sems to have no problems and that is my mac mini which is in my room and acts as my media center. Other than that there are 5 other pc's and laptops in the house and they all seem to have problems. I have suggested that we run a cable through to each room but the guy who owns it doesn't to do that as he has only just redecorated the place.

 

Anyone got any ideas on what i should try next?

a friend had something similar with a sky one he reset the factory settings and changed the WPA key.

I am the only one who uses bittorrent but only on occasion and then only when everyone is at work. As for resetting the router to factory defaults we have already tried that but to no avail.

Sky have "modified" the router so that Netgears firmware cannot be used.

Known problem with Sky supplied routers. All bets are off. Get a new router.

Can you beg/ steal/ borrow another router to try?

 

I have the same router and have similar problems. My connection will go off for a few seconds at the same times every day. I only notice the one at midnight as i'm usually online then. I've changed the firmware a few times so I don't think it's that. I was going to try disabling the bell wire as some people had suggested that. Tutorial here: http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php

DG834GT's are plagued with heat issues - I'm suprised sky issue them.

A house I lived in once the guy had a wireless CCTV camera he used to monitor his car with, that thing used to knock out my wireless connection on certain channel numbers. Also try changing the channel the network is using, could be a conflict with another network.

I'll have a look at changing the channel on the router at somepoint tomorrow when they are all out at work as it will be easier
