School Boarders - do you relax your filtering out of 'school' hours (evenings)?

Just asking all those who support networks in schools that have boarders.

If anything, I would probably be inclined to make it more restrictive out of school hours for boarders. During the school day they would (should) be supervised by teachers more often than not. After hours there would be much less supervision I would expect. Perhaps open the filtering on a sliding scale if you're so inclined with most restrictive on the youngest students and least restrictive on the oldest.

We don't really relax the filtering much, more relax the application control on what they can do and get rid of QoS. My view is that it is a students home and whilst we have a duty of care, we should allow them to do what they like within our parameters. So we allow steam,gaming sites, facebook games and disable QoS on youtube, facebook and any other social networking. We were using untangle to do all of this but it crashed all the time and didn't do it as well as we would have hoped. Looking for solutions now to do it better..... oh and we log everything as it is law here.

We use the iBoss 3550 from Phantom here and it works fantastically and logs and reports on everything (logs can easily be archived). It is the most flexible, reliable, easy to use and cost effective solution I've seen and I've used and tested a few filters.

Yes, school hours the boarders have same policy as day pupils and after school before prep it is relaxed and during prep same as during the day and after prep it is relaxed and then everything is blocked after 11 pm.

 

For certain websites they feel they should have access to they have a clear route on who to go to ask for a discussion on reasons for it being blocked or it will be allowed.

 

Works fine they all obey the rules regarding the schools IT use policy, and when they want to get on facebook or anything inappropriate they use their phones which their parents provide.
