OSSMAPhil Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Hi, We have over 1000 devices in school. They are all Windows 7 Ent 64bit SP1. 3 AD servers are 2008 and 1 AD server is 2008 R2. Recently we have started getting random PCs - cabled (not laptops - wireless), which seem to hang on applying GPs. The can take up to 4 hours to get to either the logon screen (bootup) or desktop (logon). This is the same if they are student, staff, admin or local admin users. The only fix we have found is to rebuild them! However the problem has started to come back on PCs that have already been rebuilt. It is not affecting all PCs just random ones in different rooms, floors, etc. As far as we can tell it is not an issue with any of the GPs as they work fine on other PCs and the laptops. They can be sat there applying folders policy policy, (we do not have a policy called folders policy), or applying computer settings. Verbos logon is enabled. When it actually gets round to our policies i.e. school settings policy, is shows this on the screen and only takes seconds. Most PCs only take 1-2 minutes to boot and 2-5 minutes to logon. Any help will be grateful. This seems to be getting worse with 8 new PCs starting to do this this morning.
Mark182 Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Unexpectedly slow startup or logon process in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7 here's the link 1
OSSMAPhil Posted July 1, 2013 Author Posted July 1, 2013 Thanks, I have downloaded this hotfix and will try it out on a PC before sending out using WSUS.
OSSMAPhil Posted July 1, 2013 Author Posted July 1, 2013 Does anyone know if there is a quicker way to actually logon to an affected PC so that I can install the update. Been waiting an hour to get to the logon screen (no network cable) and then for another 2 hours to logon locally!
OSSMAPhil Posted July 2, 2013 Author Posted July 2, 2013 Thank you for your help. This hotfix has fixed the issue, however I cannot find any way to send this out to all workstations. Does this have to be a manual job on each PC or wait until we can rebuild them?
jamesreedersmith Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 You can script it to install it as a startup script.
jugglerjoe Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 first of all. To get past slow start ups. force power off (hold button/unplug power) and turn on again and it should skip the affected GP. Try out the hotfix as that could be the way forward. however, could also be worth enabling the GP option. Comp config -> Admin Templates -> System -> "Display Highly Detailed Status Messages" and set it to enable and you should easily be able to see where the GP is hanging
OSSMAPhil Posted July 10, 2013 Author Posted July 10, 2013 finally got this issue sorted. After getting the correct hotfix from microsoft KB2617858 we sent this as a shutdown policy (mainly as it needs to restart after installing). This has gone to most PC/laptops. However there are still some that are taking ages to get to the logon screen. Pupils are holding the power button in if they take longer than 5 mins and then they do not get the hotfix. We are going round now and finding the ones that are still suffering, and keeping them in our office to let them get to the logon screen (4 hours is the record). Once they have got the that point, they have got the GP to add the shutdown script and then shutting them down runs the script and that machine is now fixed! Taken months to sort this out! Thanks for everyones help.
