I'm considering getting a new battery for my HTC Desire HD. A quick net search returns loads of "iffy" looking sites and re-sellers on Amazon/Ebay. I guess an "official" HTC battery will be the safe option to go for, but not sure if there are any better options that are available? I obviously don't want something that will blow up, or die after 2 hours standby. Any recommendations of a reliable place to check out?

Are you looking for a replacement or a spare?

I've got replacements from Mobile Phone Batteries previously and not had a problem with them. Customer support is good too, as they sent me the wrong battery once but it was very quickly swapped over with the correct one.

If just a spare I would recommend one of these instead - Anker® Astro3E Mobile Battery Pack 10000mAh External Battery Pack High Capacity Power Bank Charger (Dual 5V 3A USB Output) for Smart Phones, Android Phones, PS Vita, GoPro; iPhone 5, iPhone mini (Lightning Cable not Provided), iPhone 4S, iPad 3; Sams I use it all the time for various devices.

Replacement. From an overnight charge, and minimal use, the battery is usually dead around 3pm.

I bought one from an Amazon seller. Nothing on the page gave any indication that it was coming from China. I assume it is genuine, but how the **** do I check?

Interesting. At £5.98, it may well be worth a punt! :)

Double the mAh too. :)

That's what I thought and was pleased with it. My wife had one too. I did also buy a different one that was claimed a higher capacity but it gave worse performance than stock.

Update: Battery is in and seems to be working a treat. Performance is better then my old one, looks like I should get a full day from it. I reckon I would get more from it if I had not over clocked my phone. :)
