profit10 Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Hi, We currently have Sharepoint set up at our school for staff members to use. I have been asked to look into setting up a free VLE preferably with sharepoint so students can hand in documents to teachers etc. We would also need students to be able to access their documents with this. Can this be easily achieved? Or is there a better free alternative? We've played about with Moodle before but this was dismissed by management so won't be looking at that. Any help or input would be great. Thanks.
zag Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 There aren't any good VLE's for sharepoint that I have ever seen. We use Sharepoint to submit work but we just set up simple upload directories for each department and class. It works quite well, I really dont understand the need for a full VLE sometimes. We have had a few in our time and nobody has ever used them properly. Moodle is probably your best bet.
BKGarry Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I have been looking at My Big Campus, it is free but I have not launched it fully yet :-)
Trapper Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Speak to Alex Pearce ([email protected]). *That'll be a referral fee please Mr P!
themightymrp Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 As a thought, Office 365 using the Free A2 plan and only selecting the SharePoint options would allow students to have access to SharePoint (or Skydrive Pro as they call it). Simple 7Gb storage per user and online office web-apps to boot so that they can edit from anywhere

Ephelyon Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 LP+ uses SharePoint as its back-end - and does it well I think - but isn't free. Learning Possibilities
wiseoldowl Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Big Moodle fan here. If what you're looking for is only the ability to upload documents from students to teachers then there is no need to use Moodle or any VLE. There will be plenty of more appropriate ways to achieve that. You don't say but presumably you will want your students to upload from an external location as well as internal. But if you're looking for software that will help teachers engage with their students online, provide resources and activities for online learning and utilise assessment tools then maybe a VLE is what you're looking for. It might be a good idea to specify what features you and your SLT are looking for and search on that basis. Good luck.
TheScarfedOne Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Look up @rpwillis... you will be after SLK to add on to your existing Sharepoint which gives you the assign work ability. Running it here and works nicely 1
