Server 2K3 - Few questions

I'm playing about with my home network and eval copy of Windows Server (Great fun )

 

Anyway I set a custom wallpaper up via Active Desktop GPO but then Windows XP decides to disable transparent icons (i.e. there is a border of the solid background colour round text of icons).

 

Also I wish to map a certain user to a Outlook file stored on the server (Mapped as a P:\ drive) so when they open Outlook it automatically sets the file location to the file stored on P:\

to do the outlook pst files you'll need the office adm files, you can dload them from M$ then ad those into your GPO and specify the location of the .pst using the %username% variable

I know you're only experimenting so there's no problem with what you're doing, but you really don't want to put PST files on a network share. There are details at http://blogs.technet.com/askperf/archive/2007/01/21/network-stored-pst-files-don-t-do-it.aspx about why not.

 

I don't know if you have Exchange server but you would be much better leaving the email on the Exchange server if you are and using MAPI from Outlook to connect to it.

Save your custom background as a .bmp

I know exactly what you mean and it distorts the wallpaper as well tried to fix it I don’t think its possible. I do know it has been fixed in Vista.

Have you tried using tweakui, it changes stuff with a nice GUI, I think you can change the icon transparency, and if you track that in the registry you can put this back to the way you want them.

 

It might also give you an idea of what else you can change.
