Move SCCM 2012 to New Server

Hi,

 

I need to move my current SCCM Server 2012 SP1 from a Server 2008 R2 server to a Server 2012 server. My Database is on another server but all other stuff is on that SCCM box.

 

Can anyone advise on the best way to do this? Someone suggested get a second server on the site and move the stuff over. Someone else suggested do a backup and restore.

 

What do you think please?

 

If i added a second server to the site and move stuff over do i use the same DB?

I'd go with the backup & restore - backup the site, power off the server, build a new 2012 server with the same name, install SCCM and restore it from Backup

Will it just pickup my existing SQL server etc? Am i right in thinking i select an option to restore or "Recover site" during the initial install?

I've never done a recover so i'm guessing here, but I would imagine that it should look for the existing SQL Server - and if you keep the same server name then it'll make the restore easier and shouldn't mess anything up (too much!) - specifically your SSL Certificates!

 

Second Sites will need at least a new Site code, and may also want a new SQL Database depending on the type of site you're installing

Do an SCCM backup using the builtin backup task first and do the restore from that. You will save yourself a LOT of pain.

We use that task anyway automatically so we should be covered there. Will have a google to see about restoring. I haven't seen much about this.

Can you not upgrade the server to 2012?

Do you mean an inplace upgrade? I have been advised against it by a couple of people including @TheScarfedOne - I was a little cautious myself.

 

Looking on the net it should be simple to restore from a backup. You simply select recover site during an install.

Microsoft do not support in-place upgrades of Windows Server when you have things like Exchange and SQL installed. Although it's old, this article explains why.

I am also wondering what i do with WSUS. Do i install a fresh on the new server and not move anything over? Or do i migrate the stuff from the old server?

I'd recommend doing it fresh - it installed WSUS as part of the installation of the role, but not sure how it reacts to a restore

Also, WS2012 has a newer version of WSUS than 2008 R2

I did the migration at weekend and i will sum it up in one word... Easy!!!!

 

I did the prerequisites a few days before. On the day i took a backup and shut down the old box. Joined the new one to the domain with the same name, started the setup and clicked recover site. Pointed to the backup folder, told the installer not to restore the DB as that box is still running. Once installed i had to update the distribution points with my packages etc.

 

Very happy with how it went!

Both VMs too - so snapshots will make life easier too!

Thank you all. Really useful information. I also need to move my SCCM2012 R2 server (SQL on a diff box) from Winserver 2008 to 2012 but have a dilemma. I want to upgrade SCCM to SP1 but I'm not sure if should do the upgrade first and a few days later do the move or do the move first and later the upgrade. What is recommended to do first?
