CPU configuration for our backup server

We are going to purchase a 2nd user proliant DL380 G5 server for use as our backup server. This is the minimum officially supported specification for Win2008 R2. All it will be used for is to host Arcserv of which runs a SQL Express 2008 database and then output data to an LT06 tape library via SAS riser card.

 

The main choices we face are CPU configuration. What do you reckon?

 

1 x fast CPU

2 x mid spec CPU?

 

Plenty of choices including 2 and 4 core processors about.

How much ram do you require, the only reason i say this is you may find its cheaper to buy a newer server than it is to put additional memory into the G5, i know this was the case for one of my clients.

8Gb should be plenty for a one use server.

That's not too bad but its still not cheap! Although likely you will get the host with that much in.

 

From looking at the specs they recommend anything fast than 1Ghz so I would go with a middle of the field CPU TBH
